The etymology behind the words art and craft are very different. Art came in around the early 1300’s the word usage back then was fine art, artwork, and artistry. The word art became a word around the year 1000. Art was the most popular around these times. The word art really hasn’t changed its meaning throughout time, it has stayed the same the painted then and we still paint now. The language of origin for art would be before 950 and it was middle English; old English also it was an addition to the English language which came from Germany. Craft didn’t become in use until the late 1500’s in the U.S. The word did not come from another country it actually started in the U.S. The word origin is “power, strength, might” The way it was used back then was “skill, or art”. The meaning of the word craft really hasn’t changed over time it has stayed the same.
Through the evolution of the English language, “art” has the similar connotation as it did back in the 1300’s. Then it meant skill and and beauty and today that is also the same meaning. Not exactly the same for “craft” it has a different connotation today it means mainly things made by hand, but in the 1500’s it was just another word for art. The word art is more abstract than concrete but then again it really depends on what kind of art it is and it is more is more general than specific. For example the picture I uploaded to my blog of the painting that is more abstract it has colors and different designs just not really concrete or general. Craft is more concrete than abstract because craft is something you make with your hand for example like the picture I uploaded on my blog it was a craft of a rat. It was made by pipe cleaners and pom poms, which makes it a craft, you can physically touch it. Also the word craft is more specific it really isn’t a general topic, It is describing more someone’s artwork. To conclude all of this craft and art are both similar and different. The history of each word is different they're both different from where they originated from and how they were used then and how they are used now.
