Diction Analysis Essay

Art and craft, both have the same purpose.  These two words both mean beauty and expression and requiring special skill according to dictionary.com.  Art is a noun the expression or application of human skill and imagination, typically in a  visual from such as painting or sculpture.(google.com)  Craft is also a noun and means an act, trade, or occupation requiring special skill, especially manuel skill says dictionary.com.  Another definition for these words is for art is a skill acquired by experience, study or observation according to the book of Merriam Webster’s dictionary, and craft a skill in planning, or making or executing says Merriam Webster’s dictionary.  So the difference between “art” and “craft” is that in Art you need a humane skill like you are better at painting to do it and for craft you need a special skill, like a skill you can do with your hands.  In the real world one word is used more than the other is, for example; “A great artist is always before his time or behind it” from brainyquote.com.  The quote here is explaining that art is good in any kind of time period..  A real world example for craft would be...“And I believe that the best learning process of any kind of craft is just to look at the work of others” also by brainyquote.com.  So craft would be something that you would learn visually.  Art is something we are always around and it is more appropriate than craft in the real world. A type of person that would use “art” is anybody really would use it; the purpose behind the word is to explain surroundings for example the art of dancing the art of drawing the art of photography.  Using the word “art” instead of “craft”; Craft wouldn’t make sense when you explain something art is a more broad word craft is more of a specific word.  So more people would be an artist more than a craftsmen because some people find artistry more creative then craftsmanship.
There are many different ways to say “art” and “craft”.  Art’s parts of speech are artist, artistic, artsy and it is a noun.  For example for “art” to be a noun it would be used like showing a quality artwork or showing beautiful skill.  Craft has two kind of parts of speech it depends on the contents it is used in, it can either be a noun or a verb.  For craft to be a verb you would have to be saying to make or fashion with the skill especially by hand according to dictionary.com.  Also craft can be a noun by you saying it being a skill used by hands, for example you can craft something you could craft a birdhouse.  The usage of craft and art it would be plain English, because it really isn’t a elevated english term or a type of slang.
The etymology behind the words art and craft are very different.  Art came in around the early 1300’s the word usage back then was fine art, artwork, and artistry.  The word art became a word around the year 1000.  Art was the most popular around these times. The word art really hasn’t changed its meaning throughout time, it has stayed the same the painted then and we still paint now.  The language of origin for art would be before 950 and it was middle English; old English also it was an addition to the English language which came from Germany.  Craft didn’t become in use until the late 1500’s in the U.S. The word did not come from another country it actually started in the U.S.  The word origin is “power, strength, might”  The way it was used back then was “skill, or art”.  The meaning of the word craft really hasn’t changed over time it has stayed the same.
Through the evolution of the English language, “art” has the similar connotation as it did back in the 1300’s.  Then it meant skill and and beauty and today that is also the same meaning.  Not exactly the same for “craft” it has a different connotation today it means mainly things made by hand, but in the 1500’s it was just another word for art. The word art is more abstract than concrete but then again it really depends on what kind of art it is and it is more is more general than specific. For example the picture I uploaded to my blog of the painting that is more abstract it has colors and different designs just not really concrete or general.   Craft is more concrete than abstract because craft is something you make with your hand for example like the picture I uploaded on my blog it was a craft of a rat.  It was made by pipe cleaners and pom poms, which makes it a craft, you can physically touch it.  Also the word craft is more specific it really isn’t a general topic, It is describing more someone’s artwork.  To conclude all of this craft and art are both similar and different.  The history of each word is different they're both different from where they originated from and how they were used then and how they are used now.

#8 What I thought about the book; A Child Called "It"

This book was really good one, It was hard to put down at times, even though it was really sad.  It is hard to believe that this actually happened.  David is very lucky to be alive today, because his mother did some pretty deadly things.  For example she tried setting him on fire and she kept saying this what hell will feel like, she made him eat his brothers poop she made sit in cold water for hours. Worst of all she stabbed him  and that wound got infected.  All these things that has happened  he is very lucky that he is alive.  This author truly amazes me, he is able to write a book on everything that has happened.  He proves to anybody no matter how hard life gets just keep going, as long as your alive live your life.  This book changes my opinion on a lot things.

"Get one thing straight, you little son of a bitch! There is nothing you can do to impress me! Do you understand me? you are a nobody! An It! you are nonexistent! your are a bastard child! I hate you and i wish you were dead! Dead! do you hear me? Dead!"
This quote really gets me, she called her son an it.  I don't see why she hates him so much!

Why did the author call the book "A Child Called "It"?

David hates everyone because no one was there to help him when he needed it.
David didn't fight back when he was younger because he thought his mother would beat him more.

Summary of A Child Called "It" Chapter 7

In chapter 7, this is the chapter were David just stops believing in God all together.  He stopped believing in God because he kept praying for the beating's to stop.  David said when he was around four when the beatings first began.  He prayed to God that night and hope that his mother would get sick and sure enough his mother was sick the next day so no beatings for him for about a week.  But since then God stopped helping him he prayed almost every night and begged for the beatings to stop, he begged to have everything go back to the way it was when his mother a loving mother who treated him with respect.  No one was there for David when he needed them his brothers were participating in the beatings, his father wouldn't help him anymore his father just do what she says and you wont get beat.  That wasn't far to David he didn't have anyone to look up too.  He had no hero and he had no role models.  He was waiting for him to wake up from this nightmare.

"Get one thing straight, you little son of a bitch! There is nothing you can do to impress me! Do you understand me? you are a nobody! An It! you are nonexistent! your are a bastard child! I hate you and i wish you were dead! Dead! do you hear me? Dead!"
This is the worst thing a mother could say to a child! This quote really gives the book its title, she called her child an it! It broke my heart a little.

Why did David stop believing in God?

He stopped believing God because he wasn't answering David's prayers.
David fought back with is mother because he was tired of her pushing him around like a rag doll.

Summary of A Child Called "It" Chapter 6

Chapter 6 is a depressing chapter, I really feel bad for David.  I cannot believe the way he was treated! I seriously hope his mother goes to jail for every bad thing she has done to David.  So mainly in this chapter she is going to be playing games.  She would get ammonia and Clorox and put it into a bucket and put it into the bathroom and lock David in there.  I can only imagine what the smell was like I hate bleaching my bathroom because of the smell but to sit in there for hours in ridiculous.  David is lucky he survived that his way to survive that was smart.  There was a heater in his bathroom and a rag he would cover his mouth with the rag and breathe in the air from the heating vent.  Another "game" she would play was fill the bathtub with freezing cold water and strip him naked and make put his head under water for a long time.  The first time she forced him and he almost passed out when she did it because she took him by surprise and he didn't have enough to think or breathe.  All of these "games" were very deadly, she is lucky he didn't die.  But the reasons why she was playing these "games" was because David's father was away.  He was at work for long periods of time because he wanted to escape from the madhouse.  He would stay at work really late sometimes overnight.  David's mother was in control of the household now, Davids father had no say in anything he couldn't say what the children's punishments were to be that was all mother's job.  Also in this chapter social services came by.  His mother knew they were coming so she started to treat David right again.  She would take them out to the park she would feed him a proper meal he got to sleep in his bed again he was living the life that he was living before.  So when things were getting better things turned to the worst once they arrived.  The social service lady asks if his mother ever beats him....David wasn't sure how to answer but he said no, only when I am a bad boy.  That made David's mother so mad, when the social service lady left David was being beaten again.  Things returned to the way they were.

"Its over sweetheart. After this moment, i want you to forget any of it happened at all. you will try and be a good boy, won't you?"
I couldn't believe she lied to him, it was like taking candy from a baby...so cruel.

Why did David lie to the social worker?

David realized something was up when his mother started to treat him nicely again like the old days.
David's father doesn't stay around much because he can't stand being around his wife and that "mad house"

Summary of A Child Called "It" Chapter 5

In chapter 5 it really got to me.  In this chapter it really showed how crazy his mother really was. So, David was doing dishes and she gets mad at him when he puts his hands out of the water for some reason in my mind it really makes no sense.  Davids mother was drunk and holding his new brother Kevin in her lap well he was five but his youngest brother.  The whole time David was doing his chores she watched his every move and every step. She didn't like David stealing food she hated when he did that so every time she knew he ate something she would beat him.  So for now on she was watching his every move, so anyways she was so drunk she had a knife in her hand which was weird, she stood up and wobbled back and forth. The women was so drunk she actually stabbed David.  It literally put me in shock, I can't believe this actually happened!

"If you don't finish on time, I'm going to kill you!"
It is not okay for anyone to say this to anyone...When she stabbed him I didn't actually think that she would try to kill him neither did David or his little brother Kevin.

Why was this chapter called "The Accident"?
In my mind this was no accident...

David's biggest fear is his mother would actually try to kill him.
David hates his mother and his brothers.

Summary of Chapter 4 for A Child Called "It"

In chapter 4 David says the reasons why he is is fighting for food.  David's mothers habits had changed she wasn't the comforting person she used to be.  His mother started to stay on the couch all day and watch television and get drunk.  Everyday David came home he was punished for the smallest things possible or for nothing at all his mother would torture and beat him for no apparent reason.  David's mother for example found out that David was stealing food or asking for food from neighbors she tried setting him on fire.  She put him on a stove and tried burning him.  Another horrible example she was so upset with him stealing food she made him throw it up and then eat it.  David wanted help he wanted everything to just stop.  The only person that he felt safe around was his father, but his father stopped helping and stopped trying.  Davids father didn't like the way his mother was treating him he would talk to her about it and tell her it is cruel but it would lead to them both becoming drunk and fighting, and just becoming more violent.  His mother didn't accept him as a part of the family anymore so his name wasn't David anymore his name was "the boy"  He did get to sleep in his bedroom anymore, he had to sleep in the freezing garage on an army cot and that is about it.  He didn't get any food so he was constantly steeling food.  Which always got him into trouble.  He is really living a horrible life.

"There's no need telling you that your going without dinner tonight, but not to worry, I have a cure for hunger."
This quote really bugged me because it shows that shes throwing food in face and saying "oh haha you can't have this! That sucks for you"

Why did David's mother threaten him with food?

David feels safest with his father.
David struggles with getting food he can't steal it because his mother found out.

Summary of A Child Called "It" Chapter 3

In chapter 3 he is told why he was a bad boy.  He explains how his mother changed from a really nice women to a wicked witch.  His punishments were getting tougher and more frightening.  He would have to stand in a corner for hours and watch people eat, and he would be scared to say anything because he didn't want his punishment to get any worse than it already was.  One of the worst punishments he got was shoving his face into a mirror and his mother yelled at him and said to say "I am a bad boy".  She would do that a lot because she wanted him to think that, then after a while he actually started to think that he was a very bad child.  Another day David came home and she went to jerk his arm to go to the mirror and she jerked it so hard she broke his arm.  So that night she told him to sleep on the top bunk, so when she went to the doctors she told them he fell off and that's what she also told her husband.  His mother didn't want the whole family to know how bad he was really treated.

"I'm a bad boy, I'm a bad boy, I'm a bad boy"
David's mother would make him say this in the mirror over and over again for no reason she thought he was a bad boy and she wanted David to believe it.

Why does David's mother think hes a bad boy?

David started to dislike his brothers because they would just stare at him and not help out they would just watch him get abused.
When father was gone mother would beat him till no end.
